Advanced Topics in
Accounting
A stimulating review of the most important issues in
accounting and financial reporting today, including the proposed convergence of
the two main accounting standards in use (US GAAP and IFRS, which was adopted by
China in 2007 and is used by most countries outside the US). This class assumes
that the student has at least an introductory level knowledge of accounting and
will cover selected topics in some depth.
Taught by Richard E. Prendergast, CPA.

We live in a world that up until a year ago
we thought was the pinnacle of financial sophistication, yet since then has
experienced the worst economic slowdown and financial meltdown since the Great
Depression. Why did this happen and why wasn't it foreseen and avoided? We
will explore this and several other important accounting issues in order to
understand what is right about modern accounting standards and where they fall
short.
The format of the class will include pre-reading of selected
handout materials, and class lectures and discussions to expand the student's
knowledge of these issues. There will be modest homework for selected weeks to
encourage the students to think about what has been presented and stimulate
questions for further class discussions.
Textbook
Because this class will explore at an eclectic list of
accounting subjects we will use handouts and custom materials selected or
developed by the instructor.
