Ceramics: The Art of Throwing (Intro to the Potters Wheel)
Suitable for beginner to intermediate students.
Taught by Landa Ruen.  Click here for Landa's profile.

In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to receive close instruction on the potters wheel.  We will begin with the fundamentals of ceramics to secure a solid foundation, types of clay, wedging and centering.  After learning how to correctly and efficiently center clay, we will learn to create a structure, dropping the hole and pulling walls.  During this time students will also learn about the drying process and "trimming of the foot", which concludes the wheel throwing process.  All students will sculpt and glaze their own pieces, learn about the kiln and also the firing process.  We will also learn the basic essentials of hand building, wedging, coil building, etc..  Skills and processes learned in this course include wedging, hand building, centering, pulling walls, trimming the foot of vessels created, score/slip, hand building, wedging, coil building, glazing, firing, etc..  Because this is close instruction, the course will be limited to ten students.  At the end of the ten weeks, students will be able to create simple cups, bowls, and possibly more-advanced pieces such as mugs, pitchers, and plates.  Come and experience the magic of ceramics in a supportive and fun environment.
