As
this is a course for students with previous painting and drawing
experience, emphasis will be placed on furthering painting, conceptual,
theoretical, and observation skills rather than reviewing basic skills
and techniques. The classes will consist of individual,
thematic projects based in oil paint with an introduction to mixed
media. The term is divided into 2 sections. Each section will open with
a short discussion of a particular manner and method of working
including artist references, conceptual background, and a close critique
of the application used to create a particular tone and
effect. The majority of the class time will be devoted to
applying these observations, techniques, and discussions in order to
complete at least one project per section.
Contemporary forms, methods, and materials will be
introduced. Students, however, will choose their own subject
matter and manner of working and discuss their needs and interests with
the instructor. This is an opportunity for students to start in-depth
projects to be worked on during the course as well as to continue to
explore new methods of working.
Note: Although the class outline may indicate a specific painting
medium and subject, more advanced students already concentrating their
work in one medium may continue to do so.
