Web 2.0 and social media technologies are not only reshaping the world of business and communications, but changing the way we relate to each other as humans.  This class will explore the key concepts behind social media and Web 2.0 technologies and how to leverage them for business.  We will provide an overview of blogs, wikis, podcasts, vlogs (video blogs), social networks, social bookmarking, collaboration tools, mashups, "second-life" virtual spaces and Web service, and how they relate to B2B, B2C, and C2C.  We will also discuss the foundational concepts that support Web 2.0 including tagging, participation, the wisdom of crowds, the do-it-yourself (DIY) movement, and the implications of these phenomena for e-commerce and corporate communication.

Additionally, we will also explore how Internet technologies provide opportunities to manage businesses more cost effectively and solve business problems.  Students will be introduced to the full range of Internet technologies and their impact on business in order to understand the Internet or corporate intranets can be used to conduct commerce, provide content, create communities, work collaboratively, train employees, and manage employees remotely.  You will gain familiarity with security issues affecting the Internet and corporate intranets and learn to analyze the costs and benefits of implementing an Internet or intranet solution.

Some of our time will also be dedicated to learning how to design a purchase experience that encourages customers to buy your product or service.  Discover Web and e-mail marketing tools and other ways to use the Internet to deliver your advertising message, such as Google rankings.  For example, Google's PageRank, how to clean up for a Google visit, showing up and maintaining top rankings.  We will also discuss the future of search engines, weighing the costs and benefits of different advertising methods and how to select the ones that are most appropriate for your product or service.

Finally, the below topics will be introduced for a basic understanding and brief discussion of their relevance to the above areas:

Electronic funds transfer
Supply chain management
