This course is for anyone who is interested in the skills and art involved in building a good story.  All good and memorable stories, unlike the reality on which they are based, contain key, unavoidable elements: well-rounded characters, a relatable premise, an interesting setting, appropriate pacing, central and compelling conflict, and a strong story-writing voice.  This course will break down these elements through short lectures and illustrative reading and writing exercises.  Writers will also be given an opportunity to read, write, and workshop with a group of writing enthusiasts under the guidance of a seasoned author.  Our main goal is to provide students with a practical understanding of the principles and practices of fiction writing.  We will read key works together from the perspective of the writer and together find the inspiration to create, experiment, and become comfortable with different narrative voices and personas.  This course is highly interactive, where students brainstorm, share ideas, and give and receive constructive criticism.  Students should be prepared to read 15 – 20 pages of text prior to each class, to participate in class discussion, to write or substantially edit at least ten pages of text a week, and be open to providing constructive commentary on your classmates' work in a supportive environment.
