Brad Westphal and Sharron Lovell (Teaching as a Team)
The Art of Photography

Brad Westphal is a professional photographer published in newspapers and magazines including The New York Times, Photographers Forum, Newsday, and others.  In addition to his contributions to such magazines as W, Fortune, and Sony BMG records, Brad's work has been exhibited internationally alongside such photography greats as Nan Goldin, Alex Webb, and Bert Stern (Marilyn Monroe's last sitting).  Brad has taught photography at the International Center of Photography in New York, worked at the world-famous Magnum Photos, and for renowned photographer Burt Glinn.  Brad became interested in photography at an early age, purchasing his first 35mm camera at age 15 and working in the darkroom of his high school photography lab.  Traveling through France, Spain, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Mexico as a teenager inspired him to become a professional photographer.  He later attended the Seattle Art Institute and obtained a Bachelors Degree in Photography from Montana State University.  Brad is currently working in China for the New York agency World Picture News (commissioned to cover the Rolling Stones's first concert in China) and for the United Nations on a project involving the Yangzi River.  He is also conducting a long-term project for That's Beijing Magazine, which includes documenting the lives of people in Xinjiang Province, Tibet, Chongqing, Chengdu, Qingdao, and Beijing.  Brad's specialty is "street photography", capturing genuine moments in life that are neither staged nor repeatable.  He has been influenced by photographers as varied as Irving Penn and Josef Koudelka.

Sharron Lovell is a passionate teacher with extensive experience in a variety of creative and photographic fields.  As a successful photojournalist and freelance photographer, Sharron understands the ins and outs of photography from both the professional and the creative side.  She holds a Bachelor's degree in photography from Falmouth College of the Arts, a Merit Diploma in Art and Design from the prestigious Tresham Institute, as well as a master's degree in documentary, photojournalism, and travel photography from Bolton University in the UK.  Sharron is on assignment in China, and is a regular contributor to numerous publications including The Guardian, Ms. Magazine, The Ecologist, Harcourt Education, and Encyclopaedia Britannica.  Several of her most-recent photos are included in National Geographic's new book publication, "Inside China".  Sharron also possesses extensive teaching experience, ranging from university workshops to field training for professional photographers.  Experienced in both digital and conventional film cameras and various formats, Sharron has an amazing gift for "getting the shot".
