Tomoko
Nakaone
Practical Japanese for Everyday Use
Tomoko comes to ELC with
remarkable academic and professional credentials. After obtaining
her bachelor's degree in English Literature from Aoyama Gakuin
University in Tokyo, Tomoko moved to the United States, where she earned
two separate master's degrees at the University of Washington, one in
Japanese applied linguistics, and the other in curriculum and
instruction, with a focus in teaching English as a foreign language.
Following the completion of her master's degrees, Tomoko went on to
successfully complete her coursework for a PhD in the field of
curriculum and instruction. Eager to share her passion for
language, along with the wealth of knowledge and skills that had been
acquired in her studies, Tomoko spent the next eight years teaching a
broad spectrum of Japanese courses at the University of Washington,
where she was also responsible for curriculum development, materials and
content, and course management. She later undertook the same
duties and responsibilities at nearby Bellevue Community College.
Tomoko has taught in various learning environments, including
highschool, college, and the corporate sector. These experiences,
along with her own unique background in multiculturalism, have informed
an approach to teaching foreign languages that is highly empathetic and
sensitive to the needs and challenges of her students, including an
adaptive and dynamic student-focused style. Tomoko's passion, both
in her teaching and in her own studies, has been the development of
interactive, communication-based learning systems wherein students
participate throughout the entire learning process. It is no
surprise that Tomoko's classes are renowned for being both highly
effective and fun at the same time.
