This class combines a solid foundation in psychological theory with the direct
application of that theory in the fields of counseling and coaching.
Psychology helps us to grasp the fundamental workings of the human psyche, while
counseling and coaching are concerned with applying this knowledge in our
everyday lives for the betterment of ourselves and those around us. While
the below outline describes the course content in a sequential manner, the three
disciplines will actually be fully integrated in each lesson.
PSYCHOLOGY
Developmental
Psychology Perhaps the most exciting field in psychology today is
developmental psychology, pertaining to how our minds are formed in infancy and
early childhood. Students will learn about Freud's ideas of psychosexual
development, Piaget's model of cognitive development, as well as Bowlby's
attachment theory.
Motivation and
Emotion We will delve into the fascinating world of human motivation,
exploring a range of theories that seek to explain how motivation influences our
daily attitudes, behaviors, and the way that we relate to others. We will
also explore the origin and role of emotions in our lives, including how they
are expressed and communicated universally and throughout the ages.
Altered States of Consciousness This section introduces the field of
altered states of consciousness. We will explore states such as mystical
oneness, meditation, hypnosis, and dreams. Students will be introduced to
dream interpretation and taught to analyze their own dreams.
Personality How do people tend to think and behave, and what causes
these tendencies? These are the questions addressed by the psychology of
personality. This section will cover the ideas of some of the great
personality theorists, such as Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Carl Rogers, and
Abraham Maslow.
The Psychology of Health
The division between mind and body is viewed differently in Western and Eastern
medicine. Here, we will explore the ways in which the mind and body
interact and affect each other, in so far as different states of mind can impact
negatively or positively on our physical health.
Psychopathology This section will explain the various ways that mental
illnesses are classified as well as the effects of these illnesses on the
individual and society. Students will learn some basic concepts about a
broad spectrum of mental illnesses from schizophrenia to depression.
Psychotherapy Treatment of mental illnesses can take various forms,
such as medication, talk-therapy, or a combination of both. Students will be
introduced to the different types of psychotherapy, including treatment
approaches and modalities.
Cross-Cultural and Cultural Psychology These fascinating new
disciplines are becoming more and more relevant as the global community grows
ever larger. Students will gain a theoretical basis in these disciplines
and be introduced to how they are applied in such areas as acculturation,
contacts between different cultures, minorities, and ethnic groups, as well as
international relations.
COUNSELING
This area of the course will provide a practical
workshop-oriented introduction to the following areas:
Attachment Theory
Humanistic
Approach (including Gestalt Counseling, Transactional Analysis, and
Transpersonal Psychology)
Cognitive
Therapy
Systemic Counseling
(with a special emphasis on the Familiar Constellations)
Psychodynamic Approach
Body
Mediation
COACHING
Students will be introduced to the principles and practices of the field of
coaching and how they compare and contrast to those of counselling and other
related fields. We will explore major methodologies within this field,
including Neuro-Linguistic Programming,
GROW, and the Integral Coaching Method.
The process of learning these methodologies will be supported by the acquisition
of many coaching tools, such as:
Creating the Optimal Emotional State
Defining Objectives
Problem
Solving
Capitalization of
Resources
Overcoming
Obstacles/Challenges
Managing
Your Environment
